Important Phases of Aircraft Maintenance
Aircraft owners or owners of airline companies should make sure that their aircrafts are subjected to regular maintenance and inspection so that the aircrafts perform well and are safe to use. Because an aircraft is complicated, maintenance is performed on it by professionals in several different ways to ensure that every part operates properly. Aircrafts should undergo all the different types of maintenance stated below.
The basic mechanical structure of an aircraft is called the airframe. The airframe is made up of the following parts: the fuselage, the wings, and the undercarriage. Airframe maintenance does not focus on all the aircraft parts but only the components of the airframe, so the engine or the propulsion system is not included in this work. Tasks such as winglet inspection and replacement, corrosion prevention and control, painting the aircraft, and landing gear replacement are all involved in the maintenance of the airframe. Letter checks is another type of maintenance performed on an aircraft. The aircraft is subjected to the letter checks, which are detailed inspections done after the aircraft has flown a certain number of miles. What these letter checks include are the cosmetic A and B checks, an intensive C check of all components and a D check which is done by dismantling the aircraft and reassembling it again afterwards. While C and D checks take a long time to finish and is not done regularly but only every few years, A and B checks which are only cosmetic checks are done regularly.
One important aspect of aircraft maintenance is the maintenance of its engine. There are specific types of engines for every aircraft and the one who will check this engine is a mechanic who specializes in this particular engine type. Engine work involves many things. It includes a comprehensive engine testing, removal and reinstallation, and troubleshooting. Regular check and maintenance should also be given to the auxiliary power unit or the APU. The APU powers the aircraft so that it can function properly but this is not propulsion. Your mechanic should also be knowledgeable in fixing the specific make and model of your APU.
There are other aircraft components that also need maintenance checks and repairs. Removal and cleaning of components, application of anti-corrosion compounds, lubrication of parts and replacement of damaged parts, are the maintenance tasks that need to be done to the other aircraft components.
The electronic systems or avionics are very important parts that has a great bearing on an aircraft’s performance. Navigation and communication equipment including GPS, radar, radio communicators, and computer systems are included in the testing of the avionics. The maintenance work done on this system includes rewiring and replacement of components if necessary, and it also requires that the mechanic has a strong technical knowledge of electrical engineering.
